More Customer Projects to Share!

Today a customer, new to knitting but a long time crocheter, brought this scarf in to share with me. It's a WIP, a simple crochet pattern she found on Ravelry made from the Zauberball. Just another reminder how great this yarn looks knit up in lace!

Here's a very cute

little sweater knit up in the hand dyed Zoe Sock yarn from Shalimar. Though this yarn doesn't feel all that soft in the hank, after it has been washed & blocked it was very soft! Another superwash sock yarn thats great for baby.

And I couldn't resist sharing these knit-then-felted gingerbread men that customer, Lori, made for her coworkers (she works at See's Candy!) I had to look twice when she showed them to me - I thought they were the real thing - my photo taken with my phone really doesn't do them justice!

Seeing finished projects is probably the most fun part of owning a yarn shop. I need to remember to have my good camera on hand and to be better about posting them here - I promise to work on that!

I'll open up Teaselwick Wools early, at 9:30, and will have coffee and cookies for you crawlers. We've made arrangements for crawlers to park in the museum parking lot. Knittin’ the Rails – An Urban Yarn Adventure

Saturday, May 28th, 2011

Join us as we travel by train to Portland’s historic Union Station, then visit several yarn shops in Portland, with a trip to the Tea Zone for a quick break, before having a light early dinner and heading back to Salem on the train.

We will be meeting at the Mission Mill Museum on Saturday morning at 9:30am, stopping for coffee & cookies at Teaselwick Wools, then walking across Mill St. to board the Amtrak Cascades #504 10:12 morning train to Portland, approximately an hour’s journey

away. Leaving the train at Union Station, we will walk and use TriMet buses to visit Urban Fiber Arts, Dublin Bay Yarn Company, Twisted (home of the entire Blue Moon Fiber Arts line!), and Yarn Garden with a quick hop to Happy Knits. We will stop for a snack at the Tea Zone mid-afternoon to restore our energy, before continuing our urban adventure. About 4:30 we will have an early dinner at the Lloyd Center food court, before boarding the #507 6:15 train for the early evening run back to Salem, arriving in Salem about 7:15pm.

Important things to know -

Knitters must purchase their train tickets in advance of the trip, to assure their seat on the train. There is a Bistro car on the train which has drinks and light snacks available. Amtrak.com

Please wear shoes and clothing appropriate for walking in town and for the weather. Please remember to carry only what you can comfortably carry on the buses. This trip is not suitable for toddlers or young children but babes in arms are welcome! Bags will be checked at the

yarn shops for security and to make shopping easier. Remember that Portland has hills but relatively small downtown blocks. And don’t forget your cameras! Knitters should bring $10.00 in change for the buses. We will be buying all day passes but the price could change. Bring only the bank cards you intend to use, in a wallet you can put in your pocket to avoid leaving it on the bus or in a yarn shop. Bring a refillable water bottle to stay hydrated – walking is hard work and you don’t want to get tired too soon!

Sock Yarn for Babies!

As many fellow knitters know, sock yarn makes great baby yarn. In most cases it's machine washable and the gauge knits up into a very wearable fabric for babies & toddlers. The fall KNITTERS magazine featured a pattern called "Sock To Frock" knit in the Malabrigo sock yarn - a yarn I carry at Teaselwick. The colors of this hand-dyed yarn are lucious and it's soft!

Self patterning sock yarns make fun baby items as well. Soon on the shelf in the shop will be Berroco

Sox and a new book from Berroco with patterns for baby items using this yarn.

I hope everyone is having a happy new year so far. We may have a few months of cold & gray ahead of us but that means it's knitting time!

Ella Rae Chunky Heathers is a new 100% superwash wool that feels great & knits up in a snap.

I couldn't resist Remix - a new yarn from Berroco that is made from 100% recycled fibers. These 100g balls contain 30% Nylon, 27% Cotton,
24% Acrylic, 10% Silk, 9% Linen. It's machine washable and a great all around multi-season yarn.

I'm canceling Wednesday knit night this week so that I can go home & peel potatoes for Thanksgiving! Have a wonderful holiday & I hope to see you soon.

Aran knitting is beautiful and timeless and Alice Staremore's amazing book, Aran Knitting, has just been updated and re-released! Students will choose a design from the book and, with the guidance provided in the class, alter it to be knit from the top down in one piece. One of the largest pitfalls for many knitters is sewing a sweater together after the knitting is finished. By knitting from the top down in one piece, this pitfall is eliminated!

There will be a bibliography furnished with the class information so students have other resources to assist them. The gap in class times allows for the holiday season and gives the students time to make real knitting progress on their sweaters, so more are able to complete them during the time of the class.

Helen has been knitting since she was five years old and has received many ribbons on knitted items entered in the Marion County and the Oregon State Fairs. She moderates several groups on Ravelry.com and a group on yahoo.com. Sign up in person at the Mission Mill Museum office or by phone (503) 585-7012.

Teasel Loves Nettles!

One of the new yarns I have ordered for Fall is Woodland from Classic Elite. Part of their Verde Collection of eco conscious yarns, Woodland is a combination of wool and environmentally-friendly nettles. Each of these fibers takes the dye differently, giving both the neutral and vibrant colors of Woodland a heathered look.

Nettles are a fiber that was used in pre-stone age times to weave cloth. They are a perennial that require low levels of water and little or no pesticides. Nettle fibers are similar to linen and hemp but produce a softer, silkier fiber. Nettle fiber is naturally resistant to stains, bacteria, mildew, light and insects. Nettles show color well and, when mixed with wool, add lightness, minimize shrinkage and are breathable.

My friend Karen knit up a swatch from the samples my rep. left me and it feels great! I can wait to get this new yarn on the shelves!

With all of the new yarns I've ordered & am waiting for I told the rep. from Southwest Trading Company that I was going to wait until September to order from her. Then I caved in.

Another New Yarn - Boreale

New this week is the St. Denis Boreale. This is a fingering weight version of the popular Nordique. 100% wool, this yarn is great for lace and for fair aisle color work.

The gauge is 7 st/" on # 2 needles and the 50 gram, 225 yard skeins sell for $7.50.

The book features patterns for both the Nordique and the Boreale including a awesome triangle shawl by Jared Flood.

Boreale is made in the USA.

New Yarns have arrived and are on the shelf! Here is some information on them:

Rustic Wool and Rustic Tweed from Queensland (pictured above) - The Rustic Wool knits up 4.5st/in on needle size: 8, comes in muted variegated colors and is 100% superwash. The Rustic Tweed is a hand-dyed blend of 63% Wool, 27% Alpaca & 10% Donegal with a yardage of 278 and knits up at 4.5st/in on needle size: 5.

Noro Kureyon Sock is a durable fingering wt. yarn in typical fabulous noro color combinations. Suitable for more than just socks the yarn comes in 462 yard skeins and knits up at 7.5st/in on needle size 2.

Not Just For Babies: Louisa Harding's Kashmir Baby is a super soft 55% Merino Wool, 10% Cashmere, & 35% Microfiber The yardage is 143 and this delicately cabled yarn knits up at 6st/in on needle size 5. It's machine washable!

Debbie Bliss fans will be glad to see the Baby Cashmerino. Another washable yarn made from 55% Merino Wool, 33% Microfiber & 12% Cashmere, the yardage is 137 it knits up at 6st/in on needle size 4.

Two washable DK yarns from Sublime are the Cashmere Merino Silk DK and the Baby Cashmere Merino Silk DK. They are essentially the same yarn with the difference being only the color choices. With 75% Extrafine Merino Wool, 20% Silk, & 5% Cashmere the yardage is 127and it knits up at 5.5st/in on needle size 6 and - yes - it's washable.

Also from Sublime is the the Organic Merino Wool dk. With 100% Organic Merino Wool, this soft single-ply yarn has 113 yards and knits up at a recommended 5.5st/in on Needle size 6. This yarn comes in a array of soft, muted shades.

What’s new? If you haven’t been to Teaselwick in the last couple of weeks then you’ll be happy to hear that there is MUCH more yarn available after a flurry of shelf building, unpacking and labeling.

This week I had several knitters seeking machine washable yarns. In addition to the sock yarns – and yes, the Malabrigo Sock finally arrived – we’ve got a couple of new yarns that are machine wash

able.

The Minnow Merino is a super soft single ply from designer Jil Eaton. If you’ve enjoyed her children’s patterns you’ll love her colors. The gauge is 4.5 sts/inch on #8 needles.

In an attempt to lure knitters & crocheters away from – well you know – I ordered a newer yarn from Berroco called Vintage. It is 50% Acrylic, 40% Wool and 10% Nylon. I was very excited about the color selection when I was ordering but when it arrived what really struck me was how great it feels! I only got a portion of my order because apparently it’s selling like crazy but Berroco assures me that more is on the way. It lists two gauges: KNITTING GAUGE #1, 5 sts = 1" on a #7 needle, and KNITTING GAUGE #2: 4.5 sts = 1" on a # 8.

Who has time to blog?? The shop is open with some lovely yarns for sale and much, much more on order. There is now Cascade Heritage sock yarn and Malabrigo Twist available.

Last week I ordered so much that without the paperwork in front of me I can only remember a few!

Hmmm, lets see... I know I ordered Portland Tweed, Jill Eaton's MinnowMerino, TyDye sock yarn, A gorgeous lace yarn, Elsebeth Lavold's Silky Wool & her two newest pattern books, a thick-n-thin cotton called Mia from Tahki, a fun chunky organic cotton called Sprout. Also several yarns from Mirasol, A portion of every purchase is dedicated directly to funding a school in the remote area of Munani in the region of Puno, Peru to educate the children of the shepherds (visit www.mirasolperu.com).

Tencel

?? Tencel - I was recently asked if I had researched how it is made. It is touted as an eco fiber, but is it? Here's a little more info: "Tencel is made from wood pulp that is spun down to make the fiber. The process boasts environmental claims as the pulp that is harvested comes from tree farms that are continuously replanted and the spinning process uses non-toxic solvents." I suppose it is then up to the dyers to carry forth eco-friendly practices.

Today I placed an order for some Malabrigo Twist and here is one of the wonderful hand-dyed colorways. The skeins are 100g with 150 yards. The gauge is 3.5 to 4.5 st per inch on 8.5 to 11 needle.

This yarn has more twist than their well known worsted (thus the name) and is more resistant to the "fuzz factor".

Malabrigo can take 5 weeks to ship to I'm crossing my fingers that I will have it soon!
